There are some things you only learn once you're in the room.
You can learn theory. You can study ethics. You can learn modalities, interventions and assessment. And then you begin working with actual children, youth and families.
A parent asks you what their child said in session. Two households have different expectations. You're trying to understand who can consent and what they're actually consenting to. A young person tells you something that raises a safety concern. You're staring at a progress note wondering exactly what belongs in it. A family disappears before you get the tidy ending you hoped for. Or you leave work and realize the session came home with you.
These are the conversations we didn't have in training. And they're exactly what we're going to talk about here.
Who's teaching this
Hi, I'm Elizabeth. I'm a Registered Social Worker and Registered Clinical Counsellor in British Columbia, and I've spent about 15 years working with children, youth and families including high-conflict families, court involvement and every kind of caregiver you can imagine.
This mentorship is everything I wish someone had sat down and talked through with me. Read more about me →
What this is
You don't need another program full of theory to consume. You need somewhere to bring the questions that show up when theory meets real clinical work. You don't need to be a child therapist already.
We'll explore the practical, relational and ethical questions that make this work so complex, from consent, confidentiality and reporting to caregivers, paperwork, endings and the things we carry home. You'll learn alongside other therapists, with a Q&A class every month, a whole hour just for your questions, and six private 60-minute consultation calls with me, whenever you need them during the year.
This isn't about one "right" way to practise. Every client is different, every therapist is different, and the organization, agency or environment you work within matters too. I'll share ideas, resources, questions and approaches, and you decide what resonates with you and your practice.
Over twelve months, we'll move through the work together — one topic a month.
Each month has a 60-minute teaching class on that month's topic and a separate 60-minute Q&A class that's entirely yours, live on Zoom, 7–8 p.m. Pacific.
MONTH 1 — Who consents? Intake + capacity
We'll explore intake, healthcare consent and capacity, and the separate agreements for treatment, information-sharing and parent communication. The goal isn't simply to collect a signature. It's to think carefully about whether the child, youth and adults involved actually understand what they're agreeing to.
MONTH 2 — Confidentiality, before you need it
How to explain the limits of confidentiality plainly, before they're needed, what caregivers will hear, and what changes when you're seeing a young person online.
MONTH 3 — Notes: writing clearly about complicated work
What actually belongs in the clinical record? We'll explore the difference between what was observed, what was reported, what you interpreted and what action you took and what to do when a parent asks to read your notes.
MONTH 4 — When a child tells you: disclosures
A young person tells you something hard. Now what? Disclosures and reporting get their own month: how to respond without leading questions, when and where to report (including when an Indigenous child and family service agency serves the family), sexual consent as a reporting question, and how to talk with caregivers afterward.
MONTH 5 — Suicide, self-harm + other safety risks
Asking directly, safety planning, when to involve caregivers, and knowing when you need consultation rather than more confidence.
MONTH 6 — The parent session + meeting the child
How do you meet the child beyond the problem everyone has brought them in to solve? We'll explore the caregiver session, meeting the child, creating a welcoming space and giving a young person time to settle without pressure to immediately talk or "do therapy."
HALFWAY — My Oops
A bonus 60-minute class built around my own carefully considered reflections, mistakes and learning from clinical work. Not a highlight reel a conversation about the moments that taught me something. It comes between Month 6 and Month 7, when we know each other a little and you may be ready to ask the questions you weren't ready to ask in Month 1. Q&A included, and recorded like every class.
MONTH 7 — Keeping trust when adults want info
One of the trickiest parts of child and youth work. We'll explore protecting the therapeutic relationship, deciding with the young person what is shared and how, what to do when the school calls, and how a young person can tell you therapy isn't working.
MONTH 8 — Two households: who decides + taking sides
Who actually holds decision-making authority, what parenting agreements do and don't tell you, communicating with each household, the pull to take sides and becoming the messenger without meaning to all while keeping the young person's needs and voice in view.
MONTH 9 — Court: orders, letters, records + subpoenas
Reading court orders, what to say when a parent asks you to write a letter for court, the difference between a treating therapist and an assessor, and how to respond to records requests and subpoenas and when reading a document isn't enough, and you need legal clarification.
MONTH 10 — Cancellations, pauses + endings
Missed sessions. Caregiver-led withdrawal. Changing priorities. Young people who feel finished before the adults do. Families who simply disappear. We'll consider follow-up, boundaries, documentation and how to preserve the young person's voice even when therapy doesn't end with a perfect final session.
MONTH 11 — Carrying it home, and putting it down
Some sessions finish when the clock runs out. Others follow you home. We'll talk openly about transitioning out of clinical work after demanding days and explore simple personal practices that may help while also recognizing when the answer isn't another ritual, but a workload boundary, consultation or additional support.
MONTH 12 — What you're taking forward + ethics
We'll take time with ethics not as a lecture, but as a conversation: the values in the BCACC Code of Ethical Conduct and the BCCSW Code of Ethics, what happens when those values pull against each other, and where they showed up across our year together. Then we'll look back: what's changed in the way you listen, where you feel clearer, and which questions you've learned to take to consultation.
BONUS — A guest expert session
Once during the year, we'll bring in a guest to go deeper on one part of this work. [Guest and topic to be announced.]
Your six private consultation calls
Six times across the year, whenever it's most useful to you, you'll have a 60-minute private call with me on Zoom, booked through Jane App. This is your time bring any question you're carrying, from your practice, from the month's learning, or the one you didn't want to ask in front of the group.
Book them when you need them: early, late or spread across the year. Any calls you haven't used by the end of the 12 months end with the program. You can reschedule with at least 48 hours' notice with less, the call counts as used unless there's an emergency. What you bring stays de-identified. Calls aren't recorded and I don't keep notes: this is consultation and training, not supervision.
Here's everything included.
12 x 60-minute live teaching classes one each month on Zoom, one topic a month.
12 x 60-minute live Q&A classes one each month; the whole hour is for your questions.
1 x bonus My Oops class at the halfway point, with Q&A.
1 x bonus guest expert session a guest goes deeper on one part of this work.
6 x 60-minute private consultation calls: booked through Jane App whenever you need them during the 12 months.
Monthly resources + PDFs: connected to the topics we're exploring, shared by email and on your private login page.
Downloadable slides for every class, yours to download for your own learning.
Monthly checklists + reflective journalling prompts to help you slow down, notice your assumptions and connect the material to your practice.
A private, password-protected login page for every class recording (including My Oops), slide deck and monthly PDF, available during the program and for six months after the final month.
A shared Telegram cohort space for casual chat, program reminders and sharing resources and websites.
A certificate of completion listing the dates and hours of your group classes and private calls, so you can report them for continuing education. Watching a recording counts the same as attending live.
This might be for you if…
You're a BC therapist with a BSW, MSW or master's-level counselling degree who works with children, youth and families or wants to.
You're a master's student in social work or counselling building a foundation for work with young people and families.
You're just starting out, or somewhere in roughly your first ten years of practice, and the questions that stay with you aren't always the ones your training prepared you to answer.
You want thoughtful consultation not a script, and not one correct way to practise.
You value learning alongside other therapists who understand this work can be nuanced, relational and occasionally very messy.
What this program is and isn't.
The Conversations We Didn't Have in Training is professional development and clinical consultation. It is not clinical supervision or counselling, and participation does not confer certification, supervision hours or authorization to practise. You remain responsible for your own clinical decisions and any supervision your professional obligations require. If you're a student, your program and practicum supervisor remain responsible for your clinical work.
The program is for practitioners in British Columbia, and the legal and consent material is built around BC law. It's an orientation to the questions to ask, not legal advice you'll always be pointed back to your regulator, a lawyer or the relevant agency for current rules.
It's professional training you can count toward your continuing education, and the final class includes a dedicated ethics discussion. Credits aren't pre-approved by any one professional body, so check with yours how to report it.
Confidentiality in a group
This matters. Before you enrol, we'll talk through participant consent and confidentiality: what is recorded, what may be shared, the limits of group privacy and the choices available to you. You'll receive a participant agreement with the full participation, privacy, reporting and recording expectations.
Cameras stay on during live classes, and classes are recorded for the cohort. Participants never share client names, identifying stories, screenshots or client records in the group, in Telegram or in private calls. Telegram is for casual chat and resources; it isn't for crises, clinical consultation or private-message support.
The founding cohort
$4,500 CAD + GST paid in full, or 3 payments of $1,500 CAD + GST.
The regular program investment is $5,000 CAD + GST, or 3 payments of $1,666.67 CAD + GST. Founding-rate availability and the closing date are still being finalized.
But you don't need to decide whether to invest $4,500 from this page. There's a smaller first step.
Start with a conversation.
Before you enrol, we'll have a free 20-minute intake call on Zoom, booked through Jane App. We'll talk about your practice, what you're hoping to learn, the support you already have, the questions you're carrying, and whether this format is a good fit. We'll also go over consent, confidentiality, recordings and the limits of group privacy, so you understand what you're agreeing to before you decide.
No pretending this program is right for everyone. Let's figure out whether it's right for you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a child therapist already? No. This program is for therapists who work with children, youth and families or who want to.
Can master's students join? Yes. Master's students in social work or counselling are welcome. Your program and practicum supervisor remain responsible for your clinical work, and practicum questions go to them first.
Is this supervision? No. This is professional development and clinical consultation. It doesn't provide clinical-supervision hours, certification or authorization to practise.
Is this only for therapists in BC? Yes. It's built for BC practitioners, and its legal and consent material is based on BC law.
Are the classes live? Yes live on Zoom, 7–8 p.m. Pacific on a weekday evening: one teaching class and one Q&A class each month. The night will be set from intake calls and stays the same all year. Cameras stay on during live classes.
What if I miss a class? Every class is recorded and posted to your private login page, and watching the recording counts toward your certificate.
Will I have to role-play? No. There are no role-plays or scripted vignettes. Clinical examples come from participants' own questions, shared without identifying details.
Will the program run if only a few people sign up? Yes. The founding cohort runs even if it's a small group.
What if you're sick? I'll reschedule the class rather than cancel it, so no one misses any classes.
How do I book my private calls? Through Jane App, once you've enrolled. Book your six calls any time during the 12 months; any you haven't used end when the program ends.
What's the refund policy? Full refund (or credit toward a future cohort, if one runs) before the first class. If you withdraw by the end of Month 1, you're refunded everything paid minus one month's cost ($375 at the founding rate), and remaining payments stop. After Month 1, there's no refund and remaining payments are still owed.
Some of the most important conversations in this work don't happen in training.
They happen afterward. When there's a child in front of you. A caregiver waiting for an answer. A decision you're not quite sure about. A note you're rewriting for the third time. Or a session you're still thinking about on your drive home.
You don't have to pretend those questions aren't there. Let's make room for them.
